A friend recently forwarded an email from BuyDomains with the title, “Dramatically Improve Your SEO Results with Premium Domains“, which included a link to a document with the title, “SEO 101 Why A Good Domain Name Is Critical To Your Small Business“.
The email said in part,
Investing in a premium domain is a critical piece of your digital marketing program. 93% of a website’s internet traffic comes from a search engine, which means it is paramount that your website appear at the top of the search results.

They didn’t ignore all the recent press about Google de-valuing exact match domains, as their bullets on slide 12 are directed to that topic,
DO EXACT MATCH DOMAINS (EMDs) HELP A WEBSITE IN SEARCH RANKINGS? (you may have heard recently that they don’t…)
- Search engines use EMDs to help determine a site’s relevance, but along with a keyword-focused domain, the site must also be delivering quality content and visitor engagement: long length of time on site, multiple page views, repeat visits, low bounce rates.
- There is an advantage- both to your SEO and Branding efforts- to investing in a high quality exact match domain name that describes what you do and acknowledges the intent of your visitor.
- Search engines favor a combination of keyword and brand name anchor text on external links to your site. By having an EMD, brand name links are keyword links, making it more natural for others to link to your site using desired keywords.
- There are different types of EMDs. Set aside a portion of your marketing budget to purchase the highest quality EMD or EMDs you can afford.

I don’t think every SEO expert would agree with all the conclusions in the document, but it’s great to see BuyDomains promoting their beliefs on the power of domains.
